Despite bone-chilling temperatures, the 25th annual Festival of the Dead procession made its way down Higgins Avenue in downtown Missoula on Nov. 2, 2017. According to the event's Facebook page, this year's theme, “Inheritance: Gifts from the Dead,” was held "to assuage grief, honor a loved one, or delve more deeply into their own experience with death."

Before the procession, a variety of people ranging from elderly people to school children gathered in Circle Square on the north end of Higgins Avenue. Some organizations and performing groups danced, sang, and handed out beads, while other individuals simply walked with the image of someone they had lost.
