The University of Montana men's tennis team won 6-1 against Portland State on Sunday, March 8 at Peak Racquet Club, finishing their opening weekend of the Big Sky Conference strong.
The men’s tennis team victory pushed their record to 8-3 overall and undefeated 4-0 at home.
University of Montana doubles team of sophomore Pontus Hallgren and sophomore Oisin Shaffrey won 6-3 against PSU doubles team Sahal Bukary and Nikola Dimitrijevic. Another victory for the men’s team was sophomore Ed Pudney and freshman Cameron Isbell. Pudney and Isbell defeated PSU doubles team Majeed Bukhari and Matteo Fortini 6-2.
Overall, Montana won two out of their three doubles matches. The only match the men’s team lost was left unfinished with senior Ludvig Hallgren and senior Max Korkh against PSU team Sam Roberts and Tommy Edwards.
The Griz won nearly all of their singles matches. Korkh won 6-4 against Tommy Edwards, setting the Griz lead to 3-0. Shaffrey scored 6-3 in the first round and 6-2 in the final against his opponent Dimitrijevic, who he and his partner beat in their doubles match earlier in the day.
Pontus Hallgren defeated Bukhari by one point in the final round. Pudney also defeated his opponent Roberts by one point. Ludvig Hallgren lost 1-6 to PSU player Fortini.
So far this season, the University of Montana is at a 2-0 in the Big Sky Conference. They’ll next play Montana State on March 15 in Missoula at Peak Racquet Club.
