Photos: Missoula hosts women-only turkey hunting class

Hannah Nikonow, a wildlife biologist and instructor of a women-only turkey hunting class, prepares to take a shot at a target to show students the different types of turkey hunting ammo during a Turkey Tactics class at the Deer Creek Shooting range on April 9 in East Missoula.Â

Nikonow explains her shooting tactics to a group of huddled students from all experience levels at the Deer Creek Shooting center. The Turkey Tactics class was part of a series put on by Venery and Artemis Sportswomen for women to learn gun safety and techniques to hunt turkeys.Â

Boxes of ammo sit on tables at the shooting range. Turkey Tactics instructors talked about the benefits of non-lead ammo in the hunting community. With lead present in ammo, game can contain lead in the meat even after it’s processed.

Students in the class got hand-on experience using turkey calling devices which can come in many different forms. Seasoned hunter Randy Tanner explained and demonstrated all of the different types of turkey calls at the Turkey Tactics class.
