ASUM still in charge of its own staff
The Kaimin, in its Nov. 1 article about the ASUM agreement with Student Affairs characterized it as “ced(ing) power over the...(ASUM) staff to the department of Student Affairs.” Not true. ASUM still retains primary responsibility for all decisions regarding its staff. This agreement merely adds another layer of oversight and responsibility, especially for “adverse employment actions”(discipline and firings).
If ASUM wants to add staff, change staff duties, decide whether a staff person qualifies for a career ladder or strategic pay or add or eliminate a department or staff position, the initial decision will still be made within ASUM. In such situations, ASUM will, and always has, worked closely with Human Resources to make sure all University and union rules are followed. Student Affairs will be kept apprised of all such actions and their input is welcomed. They will also be signatory on all required documents. The main concern of the administration is that touchy situations, such as discipline or firings, which could result in lawsuits against ASUM and the University, are only made in a full partnership with the administration. However, it is not remotely true that we have ceded control of our staff to anyone.
